ARCANIX:
IoT of the future

ARCANIX: Internet of things

Just over 50 years ago, the Internet was known as Arpanet and was limited to a group of universities. Today, the internet connects over 26 billion devices around the globe. Around half of these devices come from the IoT sector. By 2030, there will even be over 30 billion IoT devices.
We, ARCANIX, have set ourselves the goal of changing these IoT devices in a sustainable way. How? While there are various providers for programming IoT software, only a few are involved in maintaining it. That’s why we created ARCANIX Configuration Management. A platform through which IoT devices can be managed SaaS-style with minimal effort.

ARCANIX Configuration Management

Iterative approaches are very popular in the software industry. Unfortunately, this approach also has some disadvantages. This is because once devices have been delivered, it is difficult to make in-depth changes to them.

The solution

Devices with so-called image updates. This involves replacing the entire system with a new version. However, this approach has some disadvantages: Configurations have to be stored in separate partitions, you are tied to specific operating systems depending on the provider and an update is always time-consuming.

The better solution

File updates. These update individual files in a targeted manner. File updates are lean and efficient. They allow targeted changes to files without affecting the rest of the system. However, file updates also have some disadvantages: they are often incremental. It must always be ensured that every update is carried out.

The best solution

This is where ARCANIX comes in. Our ARCANIX Configuration Management tool relies on graph-based file updates. This means that an update can be defined so that it is only installed if the previous update has already been installed.

Thanks to the graphical architecture, it is possible to simply select any update. The system knows by itself which intermediate steps are necessary to get from the currently used version to the target version. This architecture also makes it possible to efficiently map complex branches and changes without running the risk of overlooking important security patches.
